No appointment needed and no shop involved. A phone camera, a window and a plain wall is genuinely enough, and the part that usually goes wrong is the crop rather than the picture. That part is arithmetic, so it can be handled for you.
What you need in the room
Very little, and none of it has to be bought. What matters is the light and the wall behind you, in that order.
- A window with daylight, facing you rather than behind you
- A plain wall, light coloured, with about a metre of space behind you so you do not cast a shadow on it
- A phone, held at eye level rather than tilted up
- Someone to take it, or a timer, because an arm's length changes the proportions of your face
Do not use flash
The single most useful rule when you are in a hurry. Flash puts a hard shadow on the wall behind you and reflections on any glasses you are wearing, and both are standard rejection reasons. Daylight from a window solves both without any equipment.
The bit that usually goes wrong
Not the photograph, the crop. The head has to fall inside a band measured in millimetres, and the eye line has to sit at a specific height, and those differ by country. Judging that by eye is where a rushed photo fails. Pick the document and both are set from the published specification, then measured on the output and reported back to you before you pay.
Check the recency rule before you submit
Worth thirty seconds even when you are in a rush. Most authorities accept a photo taken in the last six months. The UK asks for one taken in the last month, so an old file that seems fine may be refused on its date alone.

Yes. Resolution has not been the limiting factor for years. Even lighting and a correct crop are what matter, and both are achievable next to a window.

Can I print it at home?
You can, though a home printer on ordinary paper is often refused. A print shop or a pharmacy photo counter will print the file on photo paper cheaply, and many applications now take the digital file directly.
Can I take the photo myself at arm's length?
It is better not to. Holding the camera close distorts the proportions of the face, which can push the head measurement outside the permitted band. A timer at a short distance is more reliable.
